NOW! Vitra, Création Baumann partner for NeoCon

Chicago, IL. After a successful partnership in New York during the ICFF and Meat Packing District Design Week, Vitra and Création Baumann are joining together again for NeoCon June 14th – June 16th. The companies will present an inventive product installation as well as a kick-off party in the lobby of the Merchandise Mart. The installation will showcase both companies’ newest designs. The collaboration between Vitra and Création Baumann draws on their mutual Swiss origins and the Swiss design aesthetic of clarity of composition, functionality and clean, structured lines. Also participating in the display are Verpan, providing lighting fixtures and Kasthall carpets.

On the evening of Sunday June 13th the party in the lobby of the Merchandise Mart will be a festive start to NeoCon. Attendees will include leading interior designers, architects, members of the press, design industry executives and trend setters.

At the product installation Création Baumann will suspend fabrics from the ceiling to fashion floating walls in the center of the display. Making its debut in Chicago will be Energy a new fabric from the Fall 2010 collection. This ingenious fabric utilizes laser cuts to create shapes of 3D sculptural effects. Also on display will be will be Shadow III part of the Silver & Steel collection, winner of an AIT Innovation award. “Shadow III” is comprised of an aluminum-metalized, screen-like texture, offering the best glare protection possible as well as privacy assurance.

A complete selection of Création Baumann fabrics can be seen at their representative showroom Carnegie Fabrics, Suite 1123-A.

Vitra will be present three times throughout the Merchandise Mart - a new showroom on the 11th floor; the Vitra/Creation Baumann Lounge in the South Lobby entrance; and an internet pop-up hub on the 7th floor. Vitra will showcase WorKit by Arik Levy predominantly at their new showroom no. 1192. WorKit is a system for communicative office spaces that functions with just a few parts while offering office planners and users flexibility with an abundance of possibilities such as return tables, fixed and mobile screens as well storage units.

The Alcove System by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and a new version of the Place Sofa by Jasper Morrison will be major focus in the South Lobby lounge. The Alcove System is the latest addition to the Alcove "room-in-room" concept. This seating system can be combined to form generously-sized seating in any desired length offering a high degree of privacy. A corner solution also facilitates the formation of versatile seating constellations. The Place Sofa II is an addition to the previous version with half-height armrests, this new version features armrests at the same height as the backrest. Also, the Place Sofa II now comes with the option of softer padding for all elements.

With the Bistro Table by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec Vitra is showcasing its latest cafeteria and restaurant product addition. With an elegant central column, the table is sturdy and can be combined with different chairs. While it is ideal for use in restaurants it fits well in an apartment, on a balcony or in a garden, and is also highly suited for training and recreation rooms.

Throughout the Mart a group of design students from Harrington College of Design will present and demonstrate Vitra’s latest product introduction Chairless by Alejandro Aravena. Chairless is a textile strap joined into a loop, measuring 33 inches in length and 2 inches in width, which can be wrapped around the back and knees in order to stabilize the body and relieve tension, while in a seated position.

INSPIRED! De Rosine by Mokum

From Mokum's always intriguing and informing Studio 98  Blog.

"French fashion designer Paul Poiret established is own fashion house in 1903. He was famous for his controversial and flamboyant clothes. He designed creative window displays and threw legendary parties to draw attention to his work, his instinct for marketing and branding was unmatched by any previous designer. In 1909, he was so famous that H.H. Asquith invited him to show his designs at 10 Downing Street. The cheapest garment at the exhibition was 30 guineas, double the annual salary of a scullery maid."

"Poiret drew his inspiration mostly from other countries such as Egypt, Morocco and other parts of Africa to name a few. When it came to his famous parties he made all his guests dress in costume to represent these countries, if they did not dress up they were turned away. He even had a leopard amongst his lavish displays."

"Poiret's house expanded to encompass furniture, decor, and fragrances in addition to clothing."

"In 1911 he established the company Parfums De Rosine, named after his eldest daughter. Poiret's name was never linked to the company, but it was effectively the first fragrance launched by a designer."

"During World War 1, Poiret left his fashion house to serve the military. When Poiret returned in 1919 the house was near bankruptcy. New designers like Chanel were producing simple, sleek clothes that relied on excellent workmanship. In comparison Poiret's elaborate designs seemed dowdy and poorly manufactured. Although his designs were breathtaking, his constructions were not."

"Poiret was suddenly out of fashion, in debt, and lacking support from his business partners, having spent all his money on lavish parties, and in 1929 he was left with no other choice except to close the house of Poiret. After the house had closed its leftover clothes were sold by the kilogram as rags. When Poiret died in 1944, his genius had been forgotten. "
"De Rosine pays homage to Paul Poiret and the extraordinary life he once lived."

Involved! Mokum Reaching out to Design Industry Students!

Our friends over at Mokum have been busy!
"Last week a group of architectural students visited our studio. Bethany took them through her design process. For architectural students it was interesting to see the concept behind a textile design. It is important for them to understand fabric application in their career path, and although they may not specify fabrics in their end job, if they gain a knowledge of fabric application it will give them an edge on their peers when applying for jobs in the industry."

Expect the Unexpected - Kyle Bunting Furniture & Art

Gump’s Introduces Limited Edition Kyle Bunting Furniture and Art

Kyle Bunting, known for his intricately patterned, subtly colored hide rug and wallcovering designs, has created a limited edition collection of furniture and art pieces that debut on May 20 at Gump’s in San Francisco.

The collection, designed by Mr. Bunting and his team of contributing designers, consists of screens, ottomans, and several tables - all available in an unlimited range of pattern and color variations. For example, Mr. Bunting illustrates the possibilities of the collection by featuring one ottoman design in 18 custom colors. Also debuting will be a grouping of six, highly detailed 4’x5’ hanging art pieces.

Mr. Bunting has called on a group of notables in the design field to contribute their talents in creating 10 one-of-a-kind wood-framed lacquered chairs, all with custom designed hide upholstery, available for sale with a portion of the proceeds being contributed to the Gump’s Scholarship Fund at CCA, benefitting art school scholarships. Those involved include interior designers Jan Showers, Kara Mann, Fern Santini, Kris Lajeski and the design team of Neri and Hu. Also contributing is the legendary Holly Hunt and showroom impresarios Art Ellsworth and Marvin Wilkinson of John Brooks, as well as San Francisco’s own Geoffrey De Sousa and Erik Hughes.

Mr. Bunting, whose Austin, Texas-based firm – www.kylebunting.com – advanced the art of hide rugs, wallcoverings, and upholstery to its present couture level, has worked with a variety of leading designers to produce his collections including David Rockwell, Jiun Ho, Munge Leung, DB Kim, Neri and Hu and a host of others. This is in addition to ongoing designs created by Mr. Bunting himself his team of in-house designers.
“We are always looking forward,” says Mr. Bunting, “and with this new collection for Gumps we are exploring a new realm of what’s possible with hide – moving from floors, walls, and upholstery to furniture and art…with many design avenues still open for us to explore.”

Marta Benson, CEO, Gump’s, says, “We have long admired Kyle’s innovative and artful flooring and are incredibly excited about the opportunity to work with him on this debut of original furniture and art pieces. We think his work is very fresh, contemporary and provocative!”

The Kyle Bunting furniture and art collection will be on display at Gump’s through June 20.

LIST Loves John Mahoney Signature Rugs & Wallpapers

Original pattern on pattern designs, sculptural surfaces, and surprising color palettes. Inspired by kimono stencils, power tools, the debut collection features weeping cherry blossoms, detailed chrysanthemums, tribal geometrics, and urban grids.

John also turns an artful eye to wallpaper designs with trellising modern patterns, with always sophisticated, subtle and bold color ways.

"The new Zhora pattern is named after an android in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner from 1984."

"My early drawings of Zhora were also inspired by a set of flatware produced by Liberty around 1903."

"The boldness, simplicity, and naturalism of Japanese woodblock prints struck a chord in turn-of-the-century European aesthetes. They realized that nature no longer had to be tamed. Instead: it had to be unleashed. And so they gave birth to the visual vocabulary we now call Art Nouveau. I happened to be working on this design in the spring, and I think that the allium pushing up in the garden were also sprouting in my imagination."
