SPOTTED! Gretchen Bellinger on Gary Hutton

We very much enjoyed the fun, flirty and dashly feminine twist of applying Gretchen Bellinger's "Bloom with a View," to the clean, sharp and shiny "Sturgis Chair" from Gary Hutton Featured in the San Francisco Decorator showhouse.

POLLACK! Now at Trammell-Gagne

POLLACK Fabrics! Need we say more?

We are EVER so excited to share with you the news that Pollack is now at Trammell-Gagne. Please come into our showroom to check our Pollack in its new home, and see their latest collection PURE.

Pure, the first new product label in our 22 year history, is a celebration of the essential. At once sensuous and spare, it is a distillation of what we have built our celebrated reputation on: textiles of uncommon beauty that are the result of innovative materials and fine engineering. Pure, however, highlights natural fibers and focuses on nuanced texture over color and pattern; it recognizes the most basic elements of textile design.

An extravagant amount of embroidery quilts the silk face of Quilted Paisley to its supporting layers, with the sweeping motif interpreted in a sophisticated tone-on-tone palette. Silk Woodblock presents a delicate fretwork of color and texture, while Wool Homespun employs a thick worsted wool to weave its soft, rustic surface.

The precise patterning of the sumptuous Checkered Velvet is created by areas of alternately cut and voided pile. The result is a tailored and lustrous surface with what approaches a gilded elegance.

This varied group of fabrics presents a range of simple and elegant patterns and surfaces that are all woven from rapidly renewable sources.

Mark Pollack

Renowned textile designer Mark Pollack has been "solving problems" - his definition of the design process - since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1976.

"My background is in fine arts. I am interested in fine arts. And I try to inform my fabrics with a fine art sensibility."

He has taught textile design at RISD, Philadelphia University and Moore College of Art. Pollack's designs have won numerous accolades, including Roscoe/BOY awards and IBD awards. His widely published fabrics have been included in many museum and gallery exhibitions and are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the RISD Museum of Art.

"Anything you design can be used," he insists,
"but how well it can be used is a critical measure of how well designed it is".

Put into practice at his namesake fabric company, Pollack's emphasis on both function and beauty has earned him the recognition as one of his field's greatest talents.

NOW! Vitra, Création Baumann partner for NeoCon

Chicago, IL. After a successful partnership in New York during the ICFF and Meat Packing District Design Week, Vitra and Création Baumann are joining together again for NeoCon June 14th – June 16th. The companies will present an inventive product installation as well as a kick-off party in the lobby of the Merchandise Mart. The installation will showcase both companies’ newest designs. On the evening of Sunday June 13th the party in the lobby of the Merchandise Mart will be a festive start to NeoCon. Attendees will include leading interior designers, architects, members of the press, design industry executives and trend setters.

At the product installation Création Baumann will suspend fabrics from the ceiling to fashion floating walls in the center of the display. Making its debut in Chicago will be Energy a new fabric from the Fall 2010 collection. This ingenious fabric utilizes laser cuts to create shapes of 3D sculptural effects. Also on display will be will be Shadow III part of the Silver & Steel collection, winner of an AIT Innovation award. “Shadow III” is comprised of an aluminum-metalized, screen-like texture, offering the best glare protection possible as well as privacy assurance.

This seating system can be combined to form generously-sized seating in any desired length offering a high degree of privacy. A corner solution also facilitates the formation of versatile seating constellations. The Place Sofa II is an addition to the previous version with half-height armrests, this new version features armrests at the same height as the backrest. Also, the Place Sofa II now comes with the option of softer padding for all elements.

INSPIRED! De Rosine by Mokum

From Mokum's always intriguing and informing Studio 98  Blog.

"French fashion designer Paul Poiret established is own fashion house in 1903. He was famous for his controversial and flamboyant clothes. He designed creative window displays and threw legendary parties to draw attention to his work, his instinct for marketing and branding was unmatched by any previous designer. In 1909, he was so famous that H.H. Asquith invited him to show his designs at 10 Downing Street. The cheapest garment at the exhibition was 30 guineas, double the annual salary of a scullery maid."

"Poiret drew his inspiration mostly from other countries such as Egypt, Morocco and other parts of Africa to name a few. When it came to his famous parties he made all his guests dress in costume to represent these countries, if they did not dress up they were turned away. He even had a leopard amongst his lavish displays."

"Poiret's house expanded to encompass furniture, decor, and fragrances in addition to clothing."

"In 1911 he established the company Parfums De Rosine, named after his eldest daughter. Poiret's name was never linked to the company, but it was effectively the first fragrance launched by a designer."

"During World War 1, Poiret left his fashion house to serve the military. When Poiret returned in 1919 the house was near bankruptcy. New designers like Chanel were producing simple, sleek clothes that relied on excellent workmanship. In comparison Poiret's elaborate designs seemed dowdy and poorly manufactured. Although his designs were breathtaking, his constructions were not."

"Poiret was suddenly out of fashion, in debt, and lacking support from his business partners, having spent all his money on lavish parties, and in 1929 he was left with no other choice except to close the house of Poiret. After the house had closed its leftover clothes were sold by the kilogram as rags. When Poiret died in 1944, his genius had been forgotten. "
"De Rosine pays homage to Paul Poiret and the extraordinary life he once lived."

Involved! Mokum Reaching out to Design Industry Students!

Our friends over at Mokum have been busy!
"Last week a group of architectural students visited our studio. Bethany took them through her design process. For architectural students it was interesting to see the concept behind a textile design. It is important for them to understand fabric application in their career path, and although they may not specify fabrics in their end job, if they gain a knowledge of fabric application it will give them an edge on their peers when applying for jobs in the industry."
